Foot to Trolltunga

Trolltunga is clearly one of Norway's most spectacular rock formations, where it floats about 700 meters above Ringedalsvatnet.

Farthest west on the Hardangervidda, not far from the town of Odda, Trolltunga juts straight out of the mountain. Both the mountain plateau itself and the valley below were formed by the ice that covered large parts of Scandinavia through several ice ages. Every year, thousands of people come here from all over the world, to take a picture of themselves on or in front of the world-famous rock formation.

Season

The summer season lasts from June 1 to September 30. We recommend that you join a guided tour. If you are used to the mountains, you can go on your own - but start the trip before eight in the morning, so you are sure to reach back before it gets dark.

During the winter season from October 1st to May 31st, you must always go with a guide. Several companies in the area offer guided snowshoeing or skiing trips, so you can admire Trolltunga when it is covered in snow.

10-12 hour tour

The trip up to Trolltunga (1180 meters above sea level) is mostly in high mountain terrain and is long and demanding. If you want to walk it, you must be in good shape and have proper hiking equipment. But you get paid for the effort - the view that awaits is nothing short of magnificent!

From the main starting point in Skjeggedal, the trip back and forth is 27 kilometers, with an altitude difference of 800 meters. The trip takes 8-12 hours including breaks.

If you start from MÃ¥gelitopp, the round trip is 20 kilometers long, with an ascent of 320 meters. It usually takes 7-10 hours.

The trail is solid and good, and signs along the trail show how far you have walked and how far it is left to Trolltunga.

We recommend that you set aside at least two days, so that you increase the chance of having a day of good weather. And we that the area around Trolltunga consists of steep cliffs without fences, so be careful where you step!

There is 4G coverage for large parts of the trip. During the summer season, the mountain guard cabin is staffed around the clock. There are two rescue cabins along the trail - these are for emergencies only and are not intended for overnight stays.
